North East Lincolnshire Council is continuing its commitment to combatting modern slavery and exploitation with awareness-raising events planned for October.
The Council is working with partners, including Humberside Police, health services, voluntary organisations, and safeguarding agencies, to identify potential victims and act against those responsible for exploitation. These efforts are particularly focused around Anti-Slavery Day on 18 October, which aims to raise global awareness of the millions subjected to exploitation, forced labour, domestic servitude, and human trafficking.
Recognising that modern slavery can occur within local communities, the campaign highlights the risks faced by children and young people, including criminal and sexual exploitation through manipulation and grooming. Awareness-raising events will be held at Riverhead Square in Grimsby on Monday 19th October and Friday 30th October, from 10am to 2pm.
These events will specifically address child exploitation and the crucial role of public transport networks, such as taxis and buses, in identifying and reporting concerns. Transport providers are encouraged to recognise the signs of exploitation, as they may encounter vulnerable individuals being moved by exploiters.
Residents who suspect someone is a victim of modern slavery or exploitation are urged to report their concerns. In emergencies, the public should call 999. For non-emergency situations, concerns can be reported to the local police on 101 or the Modern Slavery and Exploitation Helpline on 08000 121 700.
