Barnsley will host a unique remembrance initiative, 'The Roses Remember', from Saturday 7 November to Saturday 14 November, transforming The Seam into a light and sound installation to honour those who served in the Armed Forces.

The installation will feature a whispered audio experience, including the names of individuals commemorated on war memorials and honour rolls across the borough. Over 2,000 names were recorded at the Lamproom Theatre by local veterans, councillors, and Barnsley-born actress Katherine Kelly. The illuminated roses will be lit red, symbolising poppies, to create a tribute to Barnsley's fallen.
The first showing is on Saturday 7 November at 6:30pm. From Sunday 8 November to Saturday 14 November, the installation can be experienced at 8:30am (audio only), 4:30pm, and 6:30pm.
Cllr Stan Bryan, Barnsley Council's Cabinet spokesperson for Adult Social Care and Integrated Health and a veteran, described the project as "moving and humbling" and a "poignant project to honour those from Barnsley who have made the ultimate sacrifice." He thanked all involved in the recording sessions.
Cllr Sam Burdett, Cabinet spokesperson for Communities, expressed pride in Barnsley's community spirit for honouring the Armed Forces. He called 'The Roses Remember' a "unique and powerful addition" that reflects the contribution of Barnsley people and honours those who made the ultimate sacrifice, as well as their families and communities.
The initiative is part of a wider calendar of remembrance events in Barnsley. The annual Remembrance Sunday service will be held at the War Memorial outside Barnsley Town Hall on Sunday 8 November at 11am, including a wreath-laying and parade. An Armistice Day service will take place at the same location on Wednesday 11 November at 11am. Further details on events across the borough are available on the Armed Forces webpage.
