Two nursing teams from Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust have been recognised as finalists in the prestigious Nursing Times Awards for their dedication to specialist patient care and improving recovery times.

The nominations highlight the innovative work of the Pelvic Late Effects team, whose Clinical Nurse Specialist, Robyn Bowman, was a finalist in the Public Health Nursing category for the 'Between the Navel and the Knees' project. This initiative was developed in response to patient feedback, aiming to provide compassionate and practical information on intimacy and sexual wellbeing post-treatment for pelvic cancer chemoradiotherapy. Collaborating with artist Kata Balogh and poet Jack Collins, the project shares patient stories through a series of supportive videos to be released on the Trust's website in November.
The Neuro Critical Care team, led by matron Laura Sedgley, was also a finalist in the Critical and Emergency Care Nursing category. Their work focuses on improving care for patients with brain injuries, strokes, or hydrocephalus. The team has implemented new measures, including dedicated red head pillows and daily pillowcase changes, to prevent infection and aid recovery. These efforts have resulted in patients leaving intensive care up to five days sooner.
