A new dementia-friendly space, named 'Our Space', has opened at Alfred Bean Hospital in Driffield, aiming to provide a welcoming and accessible environment for individuals living with dementia and their supporters.
The facility, launched by Humber Teaching NHS Foundation Trust, is designed to support independent living, wellbeing, and community connection. Its development was shaped by direct input from people with dementia, ensuring the space meets their needs in look, feel, and function. The project received support from Innovations in Dementia, Humber’s Older People’s Mental Health Community Services, and Humber Property Management Services.
The room serves as a practical resource within the hospital, offering information on living well with dementia, access to support, and exploration of aids and adaptations that can help maintain independence at home. Humber Teaching NHS Foundation’s charity, Health Stars, has funded various practical aids and adaptations to enhance safety and independence for people with dementia and their carers.
In addition to a purposefully designed assessment room, the initiative aims to increase access to dementia-friendly support within the local community. It fosters enhanced partnership working between the Trust, community organisations, and dementia support networks, providing a dedicated environment for education, peer support, and community engagement to build confidence and promote independent living.
