Those in or around Hull Royal Infirmary in recent weeks may have observed contractors working on the Tower Block's exterior. These contractors are conducting intrusive surveys as part of the ongoing project to replace the building's external cladding. This process involves the temporary removal or opening of panels and covers to inspect the underlying materials before they are replaced.
Next week, the team is scheduled to survey the east side of the tower's south elevation, near the Emergency Department. This marks the final phase of this particular stage of the works.
Tom Myers, Group Director of Estates, Facilities and Development, stated, “These intrusive surveys are the latest in an extensive programme of works to develop our plans to update the encapsulation system on the Tower Block. Programmes of this scale, within a live hospital environment, take a significant amount of planning and development to ensure patient care is not adversely affected and there has been a tremendous amount of work going on behind the scenes. Once the results are back, this will enable the team to further develop the plans for the cladding to be removed and replaced and – while we’re not in a position to share any further details yet – we will keep you updated as more is confirmed.”
While efforts are being made to minimise disruption from these essential works and the ongoing construction of the nearby Lansdowne Building, some internal site roads have been closed to ensure the safety of patients, visitors, and staff. Diversions are in place, and banksmen will be on site to assist with traffic flow. Visitors with appointments next week are advised to allow extra travel time or consider public transport.
