The much-loved Friends Garden, a space for patients, visitors, and colleagues to pause and recharge, has been officially reopened by Tom Gordon MP, Member of Parliament for Harrogate and Knaresborough, following extensive renovations. The garden, established in 2001, now features improved accessibility, including a new automatic entrance door from the hospital’s main corridor, allowing easier independent access for wheelchair users and those with mobility difficulties.
Central to the garden is the Tree of Life sculpture, created by artist Steve Blaylock. This striking metal artwork honours organ and tissue donors. The refurbishment also introduced new features aimed at promoting wellbeing and social connection, such as a Bug Hotel built by students from Horticap, complete with informative display boards, and new “Happy to Chat” benches designed to combat loneliness and encourage conversation.
The project was a community effort, supported by numerous organisations and individuals. John Fox, Chair of the Friends of Harrogate Hospital, presented 'Enterprise Friends' Membership Certificates to key contributors including Morgan Sindall Construction, Moortown Group, Marlborough Brickwork, Metallic Fabrications, G&H Building Services, Steve Blaylock, Horticap, EnviroVent, and Harrogate Integrated Facilities (HIF). Certificates of Appreciation were also awarded to Steven Fry (Morgan Sindall Construction), Carolyn Rothwell (hospital volunteer gardener), Ian Hutchison (HIF), and accessibility advisers Trevor Chapman, Janet Chapman, and Hayley Day.
Tom Gordon MP highlighted the vital role of the Friends of Harrogate Hospital and the wider community in supporting local healthcare. He praised the charity and the community's collective effort. Steven Fry, Project Manager at Morgan Sindall Construction, shared his experience, noting the garden's importance to hospital staff and patients, and the pride the contractors felt in contributing to such a valued space.
The reopening signifies a new chapter for the Friends Garden, continuing its mission to provide a welcoming space for reflection, conversation, remembrance, and respite at Harrogate District Hospital.
