Jack Somerville, a former student of York College, has received the Institute of Technology Outstanding Achievement Award. The award was presented at the college's 2026 Graduation Ceremony, held within the historic setting of York Minster.
Somerville, who previously studied science subjects at A Level and briefly pursued Biochemistry at university, found his true calling in engineering. He secured a Quality Engineering apprenticeship with Severfield, a leading structural steelwork group, and attended York College on day release for his Level 4 HNC in Engineering qualification.
He described his time at college as a period of significant discovery, particularly appreciating the practical, hands-on approach compared to the theoretical nature of his previous studies. "When I was at uni and in sixth form, there was a lot of theoretical stuff but, at College, there was a lot of practical work, like fault-finding with circuits and I found that was really interesting," Somerville stated. He found the fault-finding aspect of the course particularly beneficial for his apprenticeship role, which involves identifying defects in welds.
The college's facilities, including the pneumatic lab, and the experienced tutors, who possess industry expertise, were highlighted as key factors in complementing his workplace learning. Somerville noted the value of tutors who could relate course material to his work at Severfield. He also mentioned that the writing required for the course helped with the paperwork involved in his job.
Reflecting on his career change, Somerville expressed no regrets, stating, "I realised uni wasn’t for me and just went into the normal world of work and applied for the apprenticeship." He found engineering to be a compelling field, combining elements of science and mathematics, and appreciated the opportunity to learn and earn simultaneously.
Graduating and receiving an award at York Minster, a venue he had never visited before, was a particularly special moment for Somerville and his family. He described the graduation as a rewarding culmination of his hard work.
Looking ahead, Somerville is content in the steel industry but is also open to future opportunities, mentioning potential interest in the railway sector, where several of his course peers work. He aims to progress within his current role at Severfield.
