This October marks the introduction of the ‘NEL Roads: Prevention and Repair’ campaign, designed to keep residents of North East Lincolnshire better informed about the council's efforts in maintaining local roads and pavements. The campaign will detail the processes behind repairing potholes, general road upkeep, and preparations for colder weather conditions.
The initiative will explain the necessity of the work undertaken by the council's teams and guide residents on how to report issues within their areas. With autumn and winter approaching, the teams will be closely monitoring weather patterns and addressing the challenges they present. Last winter's severe weather, characterised by heavy rain and rapid freezing temperatures, significantly impacted road surfaces across the UK, including North East Lincolnshire.
Between November 2025 and March 2026, a total of 1954 defects were reported on the region's roads and pavements. Following inspection and assessment, reported potholes are prioritised for repair, with repair timescales varying from 24 hours to three months. Council highway teams have been actively addressing these issues, repairing 2522 defects between January and July 2026.
Beyond reactive pothole filling, the council's efforts encompass year-round planned maintenance. Teams are actively exploring innovative repair methods and materials aimed at enhancing road surface durability and preventing future problems. Cllr Paul Batson, Portfolio Holder for Housing, Infrastructure and Transport, highlighted the importance of road conditions for daily life in the community, stating, “We know the condition of our roads matters to our communities. People rely on them every day to get to work, take children to school, visit family and friends and travel around our borough.”
Cllr Batson added, “Last winter created difficult conditions for roads, but our teams have continued working hard to repair damage and make the best use of the funding available. We also want to focus on prevention. That means looking at how we can protect our roads, exploring different materials and repair methods, and carrying out planned maintenance where we can.”
The ‘NEL Roads: Prevention and Repair’ campaign aims to simplify residents' understanding of the work being done in their communities, the decision-making processes, and reporting procedures. Updates will be shared on social media channels, covering topics such as pothole assessment and repair, ongoing road maintenance, trials of new machinery and materials, winter gritting strategies, and how residents can report problems. Council teams will also provide behind-the-scenes insights into maintaining the road network.
