A new specialist safe sleep bed, funded by The Health Tree Foundation, has been installed on Rainforest Ward at Diana, Princess of Wales Hospital in Grimsby, enhancing safety for children with complex needs.

The bed, which cost over £12,000, provides a secure environment for children aged three to nine with additional needs, including those with epilepsy and autism. It is designed to prevent climbing or falling out, offering parents greater reassurance during their child’s hospital stay.
The specialist equipment also features special access points, enabling clinical teams to administer treatment while ensuring the child remains safely in the bed. This was purchased after the ward submitted a 'wish' to The Health Tree Foundation, an organisation that supports projects aimed at improving patient experiences in local hospitals.
“

"It’s fantastic we’ve been able to fund this bed, which makes such a difference to patients and their families. I am really impressed by the bed and it will have a massive impact for children with additional needs. It gives parents peace of mind knowing their children will be secure if they need to leave their side."

Maintaining a safe environment is crucial for children with complex or sensory needs, particularly overnight. Paula Staines, Play Specialist, highlighted the benefit of the secure space for children with sensory issues, noting that it helps alleviate parental concerns about children climbing out of bed.
“

"We submitted a ‘wish’ to The Health Tree Foundation to get this bed. We get children with sensory issues who could benefit from that secure space. Parents can find it quite difficult to sleep as they’re worried their child might try and climb out of the bed. Having this secure space can help provide that extra reassurance."

The new safe sleep bed is now available for young patients on Rainforest Ward, contributing to a safer and more comfortable hospital environment tailored to individual needs.
