Supporters attending a recent Grimsby Town match shared their perspectives on what defines the town, their pride in it, and their hopes for its future. Their responses underscore a community that values its heritage while embracing forward-looking aspirations.
Many participants identified the town's people as central to Grimsby's identity. One supporter commented, "Grimsby isn’t perfect, far from it. But perhaps that’s part of why I love it. It’s a town with scars, history and character." They added that despite economic challenges, the town retains its identity and "enormous pride", with the "real Grimsby story" being about its people rather than specific landmarks or individuals. Another resident simply stated, "It’s the friendliness of the people that makes Grimsby to me."
Pride in Grimsby was frequently linked to its character, resilience, and strong maritime connections. Descriptions included the "grit of its people", the "salty sea air coming in from the Humber", the activity of the docks, and the "feeling that this town has spent generations getting on with things even when life hasn’t always been easy."
Efforts to reshape perceptions and build a brighter future were also highlighted. One supporter noted, "Resilience and the people working to raise the name and reputation of Grimsby." Another reflected on the town's historical roots, stretching back to the Vikings, and its proactive approach to renewal, stating, "We are trying. That is us, linked to the sea, renewal, tidal and strong."
Looking ahead, there is an optimistic vision for Grimsby, with calls for a thriving, creative, and inclusive town. Hopes include attracting diverse populations and industries, fostering more art and creativity, and developing bold new projects that celebrate its maritime identity. A key ambition expressed was for "EVERYONE to be proud of it."
These sentiments align with the core values of the Grimsby Town of Culture 2028 bid: celebrating heritage, championing its residents, and inspiring confidence for the future. Residents are encouraged to share their stories and aspirations to showcase the town's unique spirit.
The campaign is inviting public involvement. A free community launch event, "Grimsby: A Place We Call Home", will be held at Grimsby Minster on Friday October 9 from 10am to 5pm. Further engagement opportunities include an online survey and becoming a GY28 ambassador via the website GY28.co.uk. Updates are also available on Instagram (@grimsby2028), Facebook (Grimsby2028), and LinkedIn.
