“"I really enjoyed the first few days of my apprenticeship because they have taught me already how physical work and inspections are done effectively. I’ve met some brilliant and kind mannered employees who I work with in my team so if I ever have any worries or concerns, I’m not afraid to talk to them about it. I definitely feel a sense of pride to work for the council, and I feel now that it’s a part of a new chapter of my life which will involve valuable experience helping me to gain more confidence with communication and help me develop my knowledge for my personal and professional growth."

A 19-year-old from Grimsby has secured a two-year Horticultural Apprenticeship with North East Lincolnshire Council, following a year-long supported internship that significantly enhanced his confidence, communication, and independence.
Hayden, initially a polite but reserved young man, demonstrated remarkable growth throughout the programme. His first placement with the council's Parks and Environment Team saw him adapt quickly to practical demands, leading to increased confidence and a greater willingness to share ideas.
His subsequent placement at the Grimsby Fishing Heritage Centre further developed his communication skills and ability to engage with others, broadening his career perspectives to include customer service roles alongside his passion for outdoor work.
Returning to the Parks and Environment Team for his final placement, Hayden continued to thrive, consistently demonstrating determination and resilience in overcoming challenges.
Ann-Marie Matson, Director of Children’s Services at North East Lincolnshire Council, praised the programme's impact. "Supported Internships aren’t just about opening doors to employment for young people with additional needs," she stated. "They are also about giving young people opportunities to grow in confidence, develop independence and discover what they are capable of achieving. Hayden’s journey is a fantastic example of how life-changing these programmes can be. We are delighted that Hayden has secured an apprenticeship with the Parks and Environment Team and look forward to seeing him continue to succeed."
Supported Internships are designed to equip young people with additional needs with valuable workplace experience, employability skills, and confidence for future careers.
