North East Lincolnshire Council has confirmed the demolition of the former YMCA building on Peaks Lane in Grimsby, citing safety concerns and the need to recover costs.

The council has taken action to demolish the derelict building after efforts to agree a way forward with the landowner proved unsuccessful. Council Leader, Cllr Oliver Freeston, stated that the decision was made in the interest of public safety and for the benefit of local residents and organisations.
The move follows a structural engineer's report earlier this year which recommended complete demolition. The building has been a target for arson attacks and vandalism since its closure in 2021, when the YMCA relocated to Freeman Street and the site was sold.
Increased 24-hour security was initially arranged by the owners but has since been withdrawn. The local authority, in conjunction with Humberside Police, has continued to monitor the site to ensure public safety.
The former YMCA complex comprises a multi-storey concrete building, a sports hall, and a toilet block, all interconnected. Once the 4.4-acre site is cleared, the council plans to explore appropriate new uses for the land.
