Zac Shaw, a decorated Paralympian and Commonwealth Sprint Champion, has officially lent his support to Grimsby's campaign to be crowned UK Town of Culture 2028. Shaw joined fellow supporters at Blundell Park on Saturday during a Grimsby Town FC match, where he shared his personal connection to the town and his enthusiasm for the bid.
Shaw, who has represented Great Britain internationally and secured Commonwealth gold, emphasised the unique sense of community in Grimsby. "There is a sense of belonging in our town and we have such a community feel," he stated. "I love the fact that you can come here and you know everybody and everyone is always so friendly. You don’t get that community feel anywhere else."
The para-athlete also reflected on the significant role sport has played in his own life, from his beginnings as a young athlete in Grimsby to achieving international success. "Everyone is so proud of being here and sport is such a big part of the town," Shaw commented. "On Saturday everyone comes to support Grimsby Town and they have a sense of belonging. Sport brings everyone together. I started at King George on the athletics track and became a Paralympian and Commonwealth champion. It is clear that sport is a really big part of the town."
Shaw's appointment as an ambassador coincides with the GY28 campaign's efforts to engage residents, businesses, and community groups in shaping the town's bid and celebrating its unique qualities. A series of engagement activities are currently underway across Grimsby, offering opportunities for individuals to share their aspirations for the town's future.
Further opportunities to participate include the Marmot Place Launch Event on October 6 at Blundell Park, and a major GY28 Public Event at Grimsby Minster on October 9. Creative community activities, such as Chalk the Town sessions, are scheduled for October 10 and October 27 in various parks. Nature enthusiasts can join a guided walk along the River Freshney corridor on October 12. The 'Talk of the Town' event at Freeman Street Market on October 23 will provide a platform for residents to discuss their views on culture. The month concludes with a Play Day at St James’ Square on October 30 and a Freshney Place and Our Big Picture event on October 31.
Residents are encouraged to attend these events, share their ideas, and contribute to Grimsby's journey towards securing the UK Town of Culture 2028 title. More information on how to get involved, including an online survey and the official website, is available.
