Major improvement works on Yarborough Road have seen their timetable revised due to the discovery of additional underground utility work required at the Cross Coates Road junction.

The North East Lincolnshire Council has announced that phase two of the extensive improvement works on Yarborough Road will now commence on Tuesday 10 November. This adjustment is due to the identification of further necessary work on underground utilities at the Cross Coates Road junction.
A 24-hour road closure will be in effect on Cross Coates Road, between Yarborough Road and Elm Avenue, from Monday 12 October 2026 until Friday 20 November 2026. These closures are to facilitate junction realignment and underground utility works by both Cadent Gas and BT. During this period, temporary 24-hour traffic control will also be implemented on Yarborough Road from Monday 19 October until Sunday 1 November.
The initial major improvement works on Yarborough Road began on Monday 13 July 2026, aiming to enhance safety and minimise future disruption. The project involves changes to the road layout to improve visibility for drivers exiting Cross Coates Road, thereby reducing the potential for vehicle collisions.
This comprehensive scheme integrates several essential highway improvements into a single programme. By undertaking these works concurrently, the council aims to reduce the need for subsequent roadworks and minimise long-term disruption for residents, businesses, and road users. Main closures have been scheduled for overnight periods or weekends.
The project encompasses the reconstruction of road and footpath sections, alterations to the road layout, replacement of damaged kerbs, drainage improvements, and new road markings. Additionally, the junction of Norman Road and Yarborough Road will remain closed to traffic throughout the works, from Monday 13 July to Saturday 7 December.
Phase 1, focusing on civil engineering and footpath reconstruction, runs from Monday 13 July to Friday 20 November. This phase includes junction realignment, kerb and drainage replacement, and footpath reconstruction. Works within sections like Grange Walk to the Tesco car park entrance may involve temporary footpath closures, bus stop suspensions, side road closures, and temporary suspension of on-street parking, while aiming to maintain two-way traffic on Yarborough Road where feasible.
Phase 2, covering road reconstruction and markings, is divided into two parts. Phase 2A, deep road reconstruction, will take place between Tuesday 10 November and Sunday 29 November, with overnight full road closures from 7pm to 4am, including weekends, to expedite completion. These works will commence from the Market Hotel Roundabout towards the Grange Walk junction. Some Phase 1 works will continue concurrently.
Phase 2B, the final stage involving surfacing and road markings, is scheduled from Monday 30 November to Monday 7 December. Overnight road closures will be in place between Grange Walk and the Market Hotel Roundabout from 7pm to 4am.
On-street parking will be suspended in and around active work areas. Residents and visitors are advised not to park on the road or path within the works zone to ensure safety and prevent delays. Pedestrian access will be maintained throughout the project.
During overnight road closures, Stagecoach Service 4 will divert via Littlefield Lane, Chelmsford Avenue, and Cambridge Road. Services will operate normally outside of these closure times. Further details are available on the Stagecoach website.
The council and its contractor, Specialist Surfacing Ltd, are committed to minimising disruption and express gratitude to residents, businesses, and road users for their patience during these essential highway improvements.
