“"A particular moment that stood out to me was seeing the achievements of young people with SEND being celebrated and recognised alongside the people and organisations supporting them. The atmosphere of the evening also stood out. Seeing everyone come together to celebrate the difference being made across Barnsley was a memorable experience."

Barnsley hosted its first-ever Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) Awards Ceremony last month, celebrating the achievements and progress of children and young people with SEND, as well as the adults who support them.
The event, hosted by the council's Disabled Children's Service, welcomed over 100 children and young people, their families, and professionals. The awards recognised progress, inclusion, and the resilience of young SEND stars across 10 categories, with winners and runners-up selected for each.
Inspiring adults who go above and beyond in their support were also honoured. Winners and runners-up were celebrated for their vital roles in assisting children and families on their SEND journey. The ceremony featured a red carpet, face painting, a photo booth, a buffet, and appearances from characters like Spiderman and Elsa, concluding with a disco and bubble machine.
Parents and carers expressed their pride, with one noting, "It was so lovely to see everyone together celebrating differences of our children. Giving them their own awards experience was very special as they often get overlooked in mainstream events." Another parent shared, "My son has such low confidence and self-esteem. It’s been lovely to see him so proud of himself and feeling like he matters."
Cllr Gary Hall, Cabinet Spokesperson for Children’s Services, stated, "We want everyone in Barnsley with SEND, and their supporters to feel heard, valued and included. We will keep listening to them and their families, breaking down barriers and helping them get the right support to reach their goals."
He added, "The SEND Awards celebrated the incredible achievements, resilience and determination of our SEND children who each have their own unique story to tell. I’d like to say a heartfelt thank you to everyone who goes above and beyond to support our children and young people on their journey and make such a difference. Congratulations to all of our nominees, finalists, runners-up and winners at the Barnsley SEND Awards 2026 - you are all inspiring."
