A new Baby Basics Barnsley centre is set to provide essential baby items to families facing financial difficulties or challenging circumstances across the borough.
The initiative, a collaboration between Barnsley Foodbank Partnership, the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA), and Barnsley Council, has received funding to cover start-up costs. The centre will offer families crucial items such as safe sleeping places for babies and children, alongside other essential baby equipment. Families will also be connected with wider support services for practical assistance.
This project builds upon the success of the 'Beds for Babies' pilot in Goldthorpe and initiatives by Barnsley’s Best Start in Life Family Hubs. These programmes have already helped families access free beds and bedding for children aged 0 to 5 years. Since July 2025, 962 referrals have been made in Barnsley, highlighting the significant need for support with safe infant sleep.
Families have received a total of 134 cots, 284 cot beds, 294 toddler beds, 245 Moses baskets, 60 mattresses, and 1,066 bedding bundles through these schemes.
Families struggling to afford essential items or a safe sleeping space for their baby or child are advised to speak with their midwife, Barnsley Council's Best Start in Life Family Hubs, or Barnsley CVS. These services can provide information on available support and refer families to Baby Basics Barnsley if the scheme is suitable.

"We want every child in Barnsley to have a great childhood, and that starts with making sure babies, children and families have the essentials they need to be safe, healthy and supported. By working closely with our partners, we can make sure this practical help reaches the families who need it most."

"Every parent wants the best for their child, but for some families the cost of essential items can make those first months incredibly tough. We created Beds for Babies to make sure more families have a safe place for their baby to sleep and get the practical support they need. The success of the pilot in Goldthorpe showed both the scale of the challenge and the difference the right support can make. I'm proud we're now building on our success through our partnership, so more families across Barnsley can get help when they need it most."

"Barnsley Foodbank Partnership is pleased to be joining with partners to deliver Baby Basics and the SYMCA Beds for Babies - Safe Place to Sleep scheme in Barnsley. For 14 years we have served the community of Barnsley by providing food parcels to people who find themselves in difficult times. This new venture is a natural extension of our work as we respond to the increasing needs of parents and children across the borough."
