New weekly support groups for adults concerned about their gambling have launched in Barnsley this week, offering free and confidential sessions closer to home.

Residents in Barnsley and Goldthorpe can now access new weekly gambling support groups, held at Barnsley YMCA and Goldthorpe Library respectively. These sessions are part of a 12-month pilot programme funded by the government and run by Barnsley Recovery Connections.
The free and confidential meetings aim to provide a safe space for individuals to discuss their gambling habits, share experiences, and receive practical assistance. Peer support is recognised as a key element in recovery and wellbeing, helping to build confidence and encourage ongoing engagement with support services.
Previously, individuals in Barnsley had to travel outside the borough to attend similar support groups. The introduction of these local sessions significantly improves accessibility for residents seeking help with gambling problems.
The programme is designed for flexibility, with no booking required. The groups are open to anyone over 18 years old. Although organised in 12-week blocks, participants can join at any time and engage with the session on the day they attend.
