Across the summer holidays, a total of 8,766 children and young people engaged in free activities designed to keep them active, introduce them to new experiences, build their confidence, and create lasting memories.
Barnsley Council collaborated with 31 local partners to deliver 451 free activities throughout the holiday period. Collectively, these initiatives offered 1,143.5 hours of diverse programming, including sport, outdoor adventure, arts and crafts, and large community events for children, young people, and their families.
Recognising that school holidays can present challenges for families seeking affordable activities, the council and its partners provided accessible opportunities across the borough. These aimed to encourage physical activity, exploration of new interests, and social interaction in welcoming and supportive environments.
Feedback from the summer programme has been overwhelmingly positive, with young participants highlighting the variety of activities available. Many reported trying new things, spending time with friends, acquiring new skills, and enjoying their days out.
Parents also expressed appreciation for the support the activities provided to their families. One parent commented, “Kids in Barnsley need these opportunities, thank you so much. It’s been brilliant support for the whole family.”
A significant highlight of the summer was Barnsley’s Great Family Festival, which took place in the town centre on Saturday 22 August. The event offered families a day filled with free activities, live entertainment, and hands-on creative experiences.
The festival was a collaborative effort involving partners such as the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA), The Glass Works, Barnsley Libraries, Base71, Barnsley Family Hubs, and Barnsley Civic, culminating in a day packed with activities and entertainment.
“"Every child and young person in Barnsley should have the chance to learn, grow and thrive. This summer, I'm pleased that thousands of children and young people have had the opportunity to take part in activities, try something different, grow in confidence and make memories that will stay with them."
