Community volunteers in Hemingfield are launching a new Community Speed Watch project to tackle speeding and improve road safety, following concerns raised by residents.
The initiative, a partnership between the Hemingfield Action Group and the Hoyland, Milton and Rockingham Ward Alliance, has been funded by the alliance. A team of local volunteers has completed training with South Yorkshire Police and will conduct regular speed monitoring sessions. Initially, the focus will be on Tinglebridge Lane and Cemetery Road, areas identified by residents due to speeding concerns.
Volunteers will be equipped with specialist tools to monitor speeds and raise awareness about the importance of safe driving in residential areas. The Community Speed Watch scheme aims to educate drivers and encourage adherence to speed limits, with the gathered information supporting broader road safety efforts. Households across Hemingfield will also receive information about the project and specially designed speed awareness stickers for their wheelie bins, serving as a visual reminder for motorists to slow down.

"We know that speeding is something residents are concerned about, so it’s great to see the community coming together and taking positive action. This project is about encouraging everyone to think about their speed and helping to make our roads feel safer for people who live, walk and travel through the village. I’d like to thank everyone from Hemingfield Action Group and all the volunteers who are giving their time to support the scheme. It’s a great example of what we can achieve when residents, community groups and the Ward Alliance work together."

"This project is a fantastic example of local people coming together to make a positive difference in their community. Residents have told us they are concerned about speeding in parts of the village, and through the support of the Ward Alliance and the commitment of our volunteers, we are able to take practical action. The speed awareness campaign and Community Speed Watch programme will help encourage safer driving and make our roads safer for everyone."
This project directly addresses concerns from local residents and supports the ongoing work of the Ward Alliance and Hemingfield Action Group to improve local neighbourhoods and foster community involvement. The Hemingfield Action Group is also seeking individuals interested in supporting the initiative or participating in future community projects.
