Martin Williams, a 73-year-old Leeds resident currently undergoing cancer treatment at Leeds Teaching Hospitals, has applied his professional carpentry skills to construct a life-size wooden Dalek. This unique sculpture is set to be auctioned next year, with all proceeds designated for Yorkshire Cancer Research.
Mr. Williams commenced his treatment for prostate cancer in 2020, receiving hormone therapy and 22 rounds of radiotherapy at St James’s University Hospital. He expressed his gratitude for the exceptional care he received, stating, “The care I received from the team at the Bexley Wing was amazing – you could see how much they wanted to help people.”
Despite his cancer sadly returning, Mr. Williams finds satisfaction in knowing his artistic creation will contribute to funding life-saving cancer research within Yorkshire. He emphasised the significant impact of research, sharing, “Research makes a big difference. I know from personal experience that even making some treatments less aggressive and easier to handle would hugely help. If funds raised from the sale of the Dalek can support research happening in Yorkshire and benefit somebody else in the future, then that’s what matters.”
