“"Barnsley is home to some fantastic examples of traditional, natural, Yorkshire landscapes and green spaces, and we know how important these are for our heritage, wildlife and local communities. The Local Nature Recovery Strategy provides a clear plan for how we can work with partners across South Yorkshire to protect and improve these valuable habitats, helping nature recover while creating healthier, greener places for people to live, work and enjoy. By bringing together organisations, landowners, businesses and communities around a shared vision, we can maximise opportunities for investment, support biodiversity and build a more resilient natural environment for future generations."

Cabinet members are set to approve the adoption of the South Yorkshire Local Nature Recovery Strategy (LNRS), a significant plan designed to protect and enhance nature across Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham, and Sheffield.
The strategy outlines a unified vision and a long-term framework for restoring habitats, supporting the recovery of key species, and fostering a more interconnected natural environment that benefits both people and nature. Developed through collaborative efforts involving local authorities, environmental organisations, landowners, businesses, and communities from across South Yorkshire, the strategy identifies priority actions and areas where nature recovery projects can have the most significant impact.
Introduced as part of the Environment Act 2021, the LNRS aims to combat biodiversity decline by guiding future investment, project delivery, and decision-making. It is also expected to support broader environmental, social, and economic outcomes, including improved wellbeing, reduced flood risk, enhanced access to green spaces, and sustainable growth.
If approved, the strategy will serve as the agreed framework for nature recovery throughout the region, facilitating collaborative work towards shared objectives among organisations and communities.
Subject to Cabinet approval, the South Yorkshire Local Nature Recovery Strategy will be formally adopted and published later this year, providing a shared roadmap for nature recovery across the region.
